All Hail The Chief

10.29.10

Qualifications to be class president in first grade — according to Ashlyn, they were told to consider the following before casting their votes — the president should be nice, listen to the teacher, do their homework, and not jump on the stairs. The teacher wrote all the kids names on the board and told them they couldn’t vote for themselves.

Ashlyn voted for Rachel. (I like Rachel too.) They couldn’t tell anyone else who they voted for.

The teacher told them that the one with the most votes would be president. The one who came in second would be vice president. The president would get a special hat, and the vice president would get a headband.

The votes were cast.

The next day, Ashlyn came into class…and found a hat on her desk.

I’m so proud.

As president, she must help all substitute teachers and help out generally around the class (does that include tattling? I’m fairly certain she’s quite good at that.)

President Ashlyn.
So, what does that make me?

Hair joy and sadness

10.29.10

Remember this shaved-head little baby?
Check it out, people! We reached a major hair milestone today.
Meet the pony tail.
Yes, it’s little. Yes, it sticks straight out. Yes, you can’t tell she has it in her hair at all from the front.
But, it is so darn cute.

Now, this one on the other hand.
This sweet girl broke my heart a little bit today.

She told me she doesn’t like bows anymore.
(Man, I look a lot different in this picture. Apparently, my hair has changed quite a bit over the years too.)
Alright, Lydia, we are celebrating your teeny tiny pony tail. But, let’s keep growing it. You got a lot of bows to grow into. (sniff sniff)

Jiayin Designs–New Things!

10.27.10

The fun of being involved with Jiayin Designs is getting to see and even help choose what will go on the site. I just updated the site with some new things and they are so neat.

Just look at this adorable Tiger change purse. Look at all that hand stitching. Hours and hours are spent on these little things. A grandmother from Jiangsu Province hand makes the tiger stuff. Love them–such rich tradition and symbolism.
Look at these shoes. The character on the tiger head means “king.”

We even had the lady make the tiger heads separate to put on hair clippies. Ashlyn wore hers to Chinese class last week. The teacher thought it was great. I might try to see if we can get these put on headbands if anyone is interested.

We also added this headband of plum blossoms. Did you know that plum blossoms are a symbol in China for overcoming adversity? Plum blossoms are the first blossom in spring and often blossom when there is still frost and even snow. Pretty neat.

The custom charms are the best seller from the site by far. But, all these new things are pretty cool. I may be ordering some things myself for Christmas gifts this year!

And, go check out the Rippee’s silent auction fundraisers starting today and running for a few weeks. There is a Jiayin custom charm there on auction to help them raise money for their adoption. Go bid for a good cause!

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
