No more caged little monkey

6.10.12

Since our little monkey fully mastered getting both in and out of her crib, it was time to let it go.

Apparently, I’m the only one with an emotional attachment to the crib. At least my husband has obliged me and simply says okay when I tell him to make room in storage for this because I refuse to ever part with it ever ever.
Thankfully, another family with 4 kids didn’t share the same emotional attachment to their boys’ old bunk beds which thanks to Craigslist are now ours.
We told our little monkey she could only peek up the ladder but not climb on the top bunk, a rule that got tossed out in about an hour despite Ashlyn’s frustration with sharing.
Bunk beds are so very exciting.
For some reason, not having 4 walls around her (even though they did not keep her in in any way, shape, or form) made staying in bed…well…nearly impossible. It took a skipped nap and a whole lot of “now, stay in bed!”s to get to this point.
Today, this mama adapted. I refuse to let bunk beds end napping.
It eventually got to this. One more time out of bed, and you’re back in a crib.

Success.
And, joy all around at the changes happening here. Evan inherited a couch for his room — something I just sorta whipped up with a $5 toddler bed yard sale purchase from Saturday morning and shams and pillows and a comforter cover we had extras of.
If you can’t find me this summer, go look in Evan’s room.

Day 1: Game on

5.17.12

6 hours ago, Mark walked out the door with his backpack and his 49 1/2 lb. suitcase and set out for China.

And, I didn’t cry.

That’s a good thing.

I’m actually feeling quite confident right now, I must say, since I managed to go back to sleep for a bit then get up at 6:15 and get everybody ready for school and there on time.

But, it’s Day 1. And, I’ve got 12.

So, there could be some crying yet and some I-can’t-do-this-anymore talk comin’.

Gotta remember that I’m on the missions field here too–doesn’t always feel like that, but I am. And, I’m a part of what’s going on across the world too (and not just because of the fundraising and supply shopping and making gifts to take and all that). I’m sending him. With my blessing. And with a whole lot of excitement because I know great things are going to be happening over the next couple weeks. And, I’m so glad he gets to be a part of that.

And, at least we have this in our front yard for a few more days to take our minds off of missing him.

This might help me take my mind off things after the kids are in bed tonight.

If you want to be a part of lifting this team up, contact me and I’ll gladly send you a calendar to help you do that.

the confederates won

5.31.09

well, they did today at least. We took the kids after church to a Civil War reenactment at a historic mansion/property not far from home. Check it out here. We got there right as the battle was starting. The kids were a little confused about why they didn’t look like army guys (I think they were picturing G. I. Joe) and who the yucky guys and the good guys were (not too easy to explain that Americans were fighting Americans). But, they loved the guns and the canons and the guys dying on the field. The South won this battle–Mark said they take turns who gets to win. The highlight of the experience was meeting Abe Lincoln. The kids know a little bit about who he is. Drew knows nothing beyond the previews to Night at the Museum which shows the Lincoln Memorial talking (a scene the kids really like…and imitate over and over and over again). But, Drew proudly posed with the guy–the other kids were too shy. We walked around and checked out the tents (these reenactors actually stay there all weekend in authentic Civil War-like tents, etc.) and got some penny candy before heading to the Y for the second time this weekend for a swim and then a fun little joint for a quick dinner. What a fun family day today after a busy weekend. Makes me look forward to more fun days this summer.

how hard could it be…

5.24.09

…to potty train a 3 year old boy? Apparently, once animal handlers in Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand had taught their elephants how to paint, dance, and play musical instruments, they toilet trained them. Seriously, if a 5-year-old elephant named Diew coincidentally can learn how to use and flush a toilet, how hard could it be for me to potty train a little blond troublemaker? I haven’t thought about it much, haven’t pushed it at all. But, seriously, I think it’s time.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
