Preparing {our Christmas tree}

12.12.12

Here it is. A day we mark on our calendars well in advance. The tradition we live out every year to climb on the back of a tractor, saw in hand, and hunt down the perfect tree. Evan seems to have a knack for it as he carefully examines branches and needles, height and shape, shaking his head at our suggestions and then guarding his own until we ultimately come back around to the one he chose.
It’s tradition. And, it’s good fun to yell timber as our 6 ft. tower of evergreen slowly crashes, always softer than the kids wish it would. Even fighting them to try to get a fun picture brings smiles to our faces.
As much fun as hayrides and pine tree hunting and free hot cocoa and cookies are, we don’t cut down a tree, remove it from where it’s lived for 7 years so that it can die in our living room for fun.
Advent. It means coming. When something big is coming, preparation is required. And, we have been preparing. With every step of preparation, there is a grander sense of what is coming.
As we prepare our home and prepare our gifts, our hearts are moved to prepare as well. And, that’s why we do what we do. We’re preparing our hearts for the incarnation, the coming of the great rescuer.
We’ve been reading about Him every night at dinner and seeing glimpses of hearts that are more readily letting go of the consumerism that consumes during this season and instead grasping a story, the grandest story of all time, and starting to see that they’re a part of it.

The advent story {Our advent stories}

12.2.12

I remember going to bed with anticipation every night from November 30th until Christmas. Sometimes, the anticipation was just too much to handle, and I’d cheat a bit. A big felt calendar covered the back of my bedroom door with numbered pockets. And, every morning before school, I’d get to unwrap a little treat that was stuffed into those pockets by my grandmother. Pretty pencils, stickers, a fun toothbrush, hairbands, just little things leading up to gift 24 which would be a handmade Christmas ornament.

That’s what advent is about–not dollar store treats and ornaments, chocolates behind cardstock doors, or even wreaths with lit candles. Advent is about anticipation.

My kids have pocket-filled felt calendars in their rooms now. Based on the conversations today, they get the anticipation thing. I wouldn’t be surprised to find some tissue paper shreds on the floor as the anticipation overwhelms one little girlie who can’t stop herself from cheating a bit. But, what are they anticipating?

from The Jesus Storybook Bible

I want them to anticipate Jesus, the story of the incarnation. I want to anticipate Him.

I searched. I pinterested. I blog surfed. And, I found some really neat family advent stuff.

Enter feeling of being overwhelmed.

Too many crafts. Too many requirements. Too many supplies. Too much for me.

I don’t want crafts and more things to fill my to-do list. I want Jesus.

Late last night, I found something I can do. One reading a day from The Jesus Storybook Bible. That’s it. No glue, no homemade dough ornaments, no sequins, no stress. Just a story.

There are a lot of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them. It takes the whole Bible to tell this Story. And at the center of the Story, there is a baby. Every Story in the Bible whispers his name. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle–the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together, and suddenly you can see a beautiful picture.

The anticipation is overwhelming. I can’t to unwrap this story.

Black Friday is one day. Now, shop with purpose

11.24.12

Yeah, I was there. I went shopping at 9pm last night and got some deals. It was madness and fun. I confess. As I looked around at all that stuff though, I couldn’t help thinking about all the money being spent and all the junk filling the aisles and how a big arrow with the word “DEAL” pointing to some trinket makes people fill their carts.

But, the day is nearly over now. Black Friday and crazy deals to get people in the door to wow them into spending money is almost done…sort of. I’ve got a lot of my boxes checked with things I needed to buy at those places, mind you. But, there’s still a good bit of wiggle room with some of those remaining boxes on my list. And, I’d love to wisely shop for those folks…you know, shop with more than one purpose in my mind. It’s not just get the gift; it’s get the gift and do some good at the same time.

That’s shopping with purpose. Sounds pretty cool, huh?

If you’re into the idea too, here are some suggested places to get you started. Feel free to add links to others you know of so we can check ’em all out and multiply the joy this season.

Feel free to click on over here and grab the code to share these sites on your own blog too.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
