Drew’s love note

5.4.15

I took a basket of clean clothes into our room for folding when I found this on Daddy’s side of the bed.

A little love note.

From our 9 year old boy who is the most lovey 9 year old boy ever.

As if it wasn’t endearing enough to have him list “snuggle” as one of the things he wants to do with Daddy, he made a list of identifying traits of his father and right there sandwiched between “likes playing” and “likes ice cream” is “loves mommy.”

Two wheels, baby

4.1.15

This girl.

First day of spring break and what does she decide to do?

Teach herself how to ride a bike.

I love her little voice of excitement: “I’m doing it!”

Brings me right back to my red Schwinn that I begged my parents to buy for $10 at a yard sale.

Who my 6-year-old is

3.10.15

6 year old birthdayMy baby is 6 years old.

We gave her gifts as expected. She ooo-ed and ahhh-ed over the scuba gear that she begged for. She jumped up and down about her Elsa get up. But, I think her favorite gift of all, the one she will remember long after the fake chiffon is ripped to shreds and the plastic snaps into pieces is this…

Everyone at the table gave her the gift of one word to describe her now that she’s 6.

Spunky.
Creative.
Fearless.
Cheetah-fast.
Fast-as-a-spaceship.
Brave.
Sweet.
Fantastic.
Adorable.
Playful.

Melting with every word uttered, at the end, as a gift to herself, she called out her own three words to describe herself.

Special.
Good.
Beautiful.

No one cared that a few gifts didn’t arrive in time and that Lydia didn’t even like the cake she insisted I create for her and ended up with a bowl of vanilla ice cream instead. This was the best birthday celebration this family has ever shared.

Truly.

Really.

Seriously.

I’m pretty sure she went to bed with sore cheeks from smiling too much. And, maybe I did too.

Homecoming

2.14.15

It was the day they had been looking forward to for a long time. Every evening while Caleb got ready for bed, Frank made his breakfast and read Caleb a bedtime story over Skype. But, seeing faces on a flat screen isn’t enough. And, lately, we’ve seen a lot more tears and heard a lot more, “I miss my Daddy!” The original plan was for Frank to arrive at the end of February to be here for the birth of his baby girl and then help his family travel back to China about a month later. But, the date got moved up a little. A father’s love for his little boy can do that.

The whole family watched from the front windows for headlights pulling into the driveway and screamed like Santa had arrived when they saw them. When the kitchen door opened, we witnessed the reunion everyone had been waiting for.

Right after this hug, Caleb smiled, took his daddy’s hand, and simply said, “Let’s go play.” And, they did. And, it was like they were never apart.

When we finally were able to get all the excited children to bed for the night, Drew prayed, “Thank you, God, that Frank got home safely.”

Everyone’s home safe and sound.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
