Orienting Ourselves

8.26.11

Seems like I just did this for another boy — the one who is now creeping up on my whopping 5′ 2″-ness. And, sending your little one off only gets slightly easier with each child–though I imagine sending off my last will be tragic (friends, prepare for many blog posts and lots of tears and drama, I’m sure).

Drew was not so happy about this (note the top picture of him literally pushing the camera away). As we were brushing our teeth to leave for school, he said to me as he left the bathroom, “Don’t forget…I hate school.” Off to a great start.
Anticipating going to his class without me, he sat in that gym and gave me a good number of “I am not going”s. I was sympathetic and consoled…for a while. Finally, I just said, “Drew, you don’t have a choice” to which he answered, “I’m the only kid in here who does have a choice.” Really? Interesting.
But, when it was time to head off to class, he didn’t even turn to look back at me (sigh).

After the parents heard all about policies and procedures and how we are no longer allowed to bring in treats for kids’ birthdays because of allergies and childhood obesity, we went back to gather our children. And, go figure, Drew was doing just fine.

I’m thinking his teacher may nix his creative name writing though.

The every-kid-needs-this kindergarten picture. Love how all the little girls wore their pretty dresses for the occasion and my guy was wearing some crazy monster shirt.

A trip to Dunkin’ Donuts to celebrate the day was in order (no childhood obesity issues here). And, somehow, that smile returned. And, I think I even heard him say, “I can’t wait to go to school again.”
Phew.

My eyes hurt

8.13.11

Mark’s sleeping in the backyard…in a tent…with 3 children…who will kick him and roll over him and wake him several times throughout the evening no doubt.

I’m inside and should be sleeping myself while the wee one is totally out and I’ve got a big ole temperpedic to myself. Instead, I’m sitting in front of my MacBook looking through thousands of pictures, looking for the perfect ones for Drew’s kindergarten book.

School is sneaking up on me here. I’ve gotta get on this. I did it for the older two, and I will not let it go for Drew. He’s getting this book if it means I’ve gotta pull some all nighters and pay 4x what I should for overnight shipping. He’s getting one.

I’ve gone through pictures from his first year. Then, I started going backwards and worked my way back from present day. I’ve still got 3 years of pictures to go through. But, my eyes hurt now. And, all these pictures are starting to look the same…

I’m wondering how many goofy pictures I’ve taken of this kid.
Too many to get through tonight.

Drew’s song

6.30.11

Keep it up.
We have your sun.
We play outside,
even in the moon
and in the sunshine
because of you, Jesus.
Oh, yeah.
(You think that’s cute? You should hear it to music. Melts a mommy’s heart.)

Preschool – check

6.1.11

My parents were great–are great. But, I have about 10 pictures of my childhood — okay, maybe 30 if you include cheesy school pictures with either my 70s bowl cut or big bangs and braces. I guarantee I have 0 pictures of graduating preschool. I doubt it was even called graduating preschool. It probably was called something way more ordinary…something like….last day of preschool.

The good news for my kids is that not only do they have thousands of pictures of their childhood thus far (for better or worse). But, Drew officially has preschool graduation pictures. Because, this was no last day of preschool–this was a graduation ceremony, people. I took the older two out of school for the event. We wore dresses. We got there 45 minutes early because Drew’s teacher told us they were expecting 500 people.

And, despite my cynicism over the formality of it all. It was cute. Like super cute. I even got a little choked up.
They made a video of all the graduates answering some questions and showed it on two large screens in the front. Drew got his official 15 seconds of fame with his answer to, “What will you miss most about preschool?” to which he answered a very serious “makin’ puppets” which set Mark off in his well-known roar of laughter. A few days later, we’re still making Drew give us a little “makin’ puppets” when we need a smile or think someone else does.

In the classroom afterwards to get his things and say his goodbyes, Drew was a bit more himself and let the formality go. Using his cap as a pizza is just more him than wearing it on his head.

We officially have a kindergartener again. And, he’s so ready for kindergarten. Just today, he wisely told me, “Mama, we think giant shoes are really giant. But, if you are a giant, they are small.” Genius, this boy.

Wonder if he’ll still have this rag of a thing that was his blanket for his next big graduation?

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
