Thanksgiving Eve

11.25.10

The corn pudding is in the frig. The pumpkin pie will be ready by morning–that’s because it needs to thaw. I know. Sad. But, listen, BJs had mammoth ones for only $5. So, I succumbed and just bought one last week. And, then, I got to make what I really wanted to make today which was two pumpkin rolls…which flopped. I don’t know what I did. I’ve never had trouble with this recipe…except for today, of course, when I need to take it to Thanksgiving dinner and present to the fam. Right now, the cream cheese icing is barely holding it together. It may just end up spooned into glasses and eaten as parfait. Fine by me.

I also just printed out the 20 Bible verses I’m going to use for a bit of a Thanksgiving activity this year. Hope it goes over. I’m thinking I may face some resistance from some adults who may think that they are not into cheesy “God stuff.” Just because it involves pretty slips of paper with Bible verses and corn kernels in a pitcher doesn’t make it cheesy.

The kids bags are nearly all packed. Why does it take so long to pack 4 kids for one stinkin’ night away?

Let the chaos family time full of thankfulness begin.

Drew’s Thanksgiving not-much-of-a-feast

11.20.10

Sometimes pictures just are enough. I will let these just tell the story for me. I’ll premise it though by saying that Drew’s class today made a traditional Friendship stew for their Thanksgiving feast. We contributed the chicken broth. But, there were lots of goodies in it including carrots and peas…yum (for everyone over the age of…say…12). The mom who organized it (God bless her) offered the kids a sticker if they tried it.

Watch the story and imagine your own captions.

Apparently, he wasn’t quite feeling it for the thing he is most thankful for (as evidenced in the pictures below)

Sunday Snapshot {Extending the holiday}

11.15.10

I am fully aware that it is November 14th and that Thanksgiving is around the corner and Christmas shopping is apparently well under way.

Look what we did this past week. Yup, while the rest of you are buying your Gingerbread house kits (please tell me that you buy the kit in the box and don’t make it from scratch), we made a gingerbread haunted house. (For the record–it was a gift. I didn’t buy it on clearance after Halloween. Though, I totally would have if I had seen it!)

Lydia tried to get in on the action. She’s so cute.

You see, Halloween is a pretty big deal around here. I know that’s sorta strange. We are a Christian family, and I know that many Christian families don’t even “do” Halloween. But, not only do our kids “do” it, they love it. I think the main reason that I haven’t discouraged it at all and have engaged in conversations in April about what they are going to be for Halloween is because of this:

(you better believe I had fun going through old pictures to find these from July 2005)
When Evan was young and unable to deal with his anxiety socially in groups of people at family gatherings or on the playground, costumes became therapeutic. He could put a mask on and become someone else. He was able to do things that he couldn’t do when he was simply Evan. It was pretty amazing to watch him transform from an emotional, anxious child to a superhero simply by putting on a cheap piece of black plastic with an elastic string over his face. I learned to love costumes.
So, yes, you’ll still see my kids dressed up as Spiderman or Buzz or a monkey or an astronaut or as Darth Vader well into the Spring…and beyond (to infinity and beyond, perhaps?). And, yes, I may blog a few months from now about our “upcoming” Halloween plans. I’m sure they will have already been discussed.

November 1: I love you day

11.3.10

13 years ago, we met at a McDonalds.
He gave me a single rose.
And, he told me he loved me.

Every year since, we’ve remembered the day. We don’t celebrate it like our wedding anniversary. But, we remember it. And, every year, part of remembering it has meant a trip to McDonalds.

Funny how we made the most unromantic spot in the world one of the most romantic places in our history.

Last night was just a little different. We went out to dinner to a local pub. I couldn’t bear the thought of dinner at McDonalds (much to our 4 children’s chagrin).

But, there’s no way we would break this tradition. So, we went to McDonalds for dessert. Even though we have 10 lbs. of candy at home, we let the kids get ice cream. And, we sat and smiled as we remembered.

But, now, we’ve got 4 kids with us too (note our little Lydia as Ashlyn took our picture). So, we also spent some time talking about silly stuff and giving belly blasters.

I am so thankful that he loved me then and has loved me everyday since.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
