10.12.13

I wonder what each woman thought as they were strategically packing chocolate chips, Dr. Pepper, coffee, and pumpkin scented candles in their suitcases. Precious luggage space and weight were taken up with these things.

IMG_8653But, when the teachers entered the room and saw their favorite items, the ones they cannot get in China, the things that will make their rooms feel more like a home, I think I knew what those women were thinking.

There was laughing and cheering. I dare to say there was joy over just-add-water-muffin-mix. While I know we give gifts simply to bless regardless of the response, responses like that give us a blessing boomerang effect.

We come to encourage; we are encouraged because we know we are being used. We are serving a purpose; we become a part of the work.

In this case, through a few dollars and some luggage space.

Tomorrow is fellowship and one-on-one time with teachers. Monday starts school visits and a bit more of a front row seat to the work. Adventure awaits…after sleep in a city that apparently never sleeps based on the construction right outside my hotel window.

First matter of business—China

10.8.13

Seemed so strange Sunday night as we made lunches, readied children for bed, and prepared backpacks and little ones for a new week. Daddy would still get up early and take Evan to school, but instead of driving into the office from there, he was coming back home to a new office.

He’s going to have to get used to the pitter patter of Lydia while he works (which is way understating the noise her little body is able to produce). And, he’s going to go through a 10 day boot camp so that he does…because I’m headed to China…in about 12 hours actually. With a team of about 10 women, we’re going to visit schools where we have teachers, meet students they have been connecting with, pour into the teachers, bring them some things from their U.S. wish lists (who would have thought Chex cereal, Craisins, chocolate chips, and Clif bars were so desirable), and show these women on the team who have never been to China some of the incredible work happening there.

Sorta cool how he’s the full-time staff now, and part of his job is sending me to China.

Off to finish packing my bags and making sure I can get that canned pumpkin and muffin mix in a 50 lb. bag. Hoping to post from there. Follow along as I travel back to China for the first time since we brought home our pitter-pattering daughter. I have great expectations for the next 10 days.

Decaffeinated

9.30.13

decaf coffee

A 4-cup pot each morning with 1/4 of it caffeinated. Some cream and splenda, and I’m happy wife and mommy.

But, I’m going to China in less than 9 days, and my “luxury” hotel room there is not going to have a Bunn coffeemaker. I know, I know, I can take instant coffee packets (that cost a small fortune mind you…but worth every penny if they’d do the trick for me). But, those instant packets are either full decaf or fully not and still need creamer, and I’m so not a fan of nondairy powdered creamer. Rather than make my hotel room a science lab, trying to mix the instant grinds to get the perfect 3/4 and 1/4 balance of decaffeinated and caffeinated, and then having to stomach come white powdery stuff in there, I’m doing it. I’m ridding myself of caffeine. Yeah, it’s only a 1/4 caffeinated so laugh if you will. But, I gotta tell you, my head is killing me, and I’m not so cheerful. That caffeine is my happy drug of choice, apparently, even if there’s only a smidgeon of it in there.

Here’s to 4/4 decaffeinated coffee in the morning in preparation for the tasty hot water or, better yet, hot water with autumn leaves or something floating in it that I will enjoy in no time. Wonder if leaves are caffeinated. What am I saying? I’m sure they are.

Itching to go

9.25.13

boots

This is not why we went to Nashville—though I so wanted to bring home a pair of these.

We went for something a bit more important than cowgirl boots.

Visiting Orphans is sending out 52 teams, 475 people, in 2013 to do just that—visit orphans, be a light, encourage, support, come alongside. We sat among other leaders and prepared for what will be life changing—a trip the first week of March 2014 to serve at an orphanage in Shaanxi, China.

Visiting Orphans Collage

The team has 9 members now from all over the place—someone just joined the team this morning. They are men and women who have made a commitment to serve, not even totally knowing what they will be doing but knowing that they are being obedient in simply going. There’s spots for 6 more to join us. I don’t know who they are yet, but I know the One who does. Can’t wait to see who He brings together for this.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
