3.24.09

What a day. I woke up early and headed down to Phili for my doctor’s appt to find out that she does think I need the second vocal cord surgery which I was really hoping to avoid. This surgery is somewhat easier than the last one since I do not have vocal rest afterwards (remember my 2 weeks of silence this past fall? not fun.) and I will not be under general anesthesia. BUT, that’s also what makes me uptight about this surgery–I’m awake for it. She will be putting in gortex implants on the sides of my vocal cords to help them close better. While she does this, through my neck mind you, I have to be awake and responsive so that I can speak while she is doing it. So, I was a bit frazzled leaving that office today. And, THEN, I headed over to CHOP which is only about a 7 minute drive from where I was to visit a friend I have only spoken to online over the past 20 months. She and I met because we both sent our paperwork to China at the same time to adopt. Last January, she joined China’s waiting child program and just recently brought home the sweetest little girl. This little girl had severe heart conditions which required open heart surgery a week and a half ago. I’ve been praying for her and for my friend daily and reading her blog often to get updates, etc. When I read yesterday that she had run out of the little girl’s favorite baby food and had no way of getting more, I jumped at the chance to have something I could do for her. So, today, I delivered some pasta pickups and was so glad that I did. I was surprised to learn when I got there that it was the little girl’s 2nd birthday today. So, the three of us sat and enjoyed a mini Carvel ice cream cake together and chatted some. It was a pleasure to sit with them both. And, as I heard from her and saw that little girl with her chest still with a large drainage tube coming out, I felt a little silly for whining about my surgery. I’m going to be just fine. Check out the pictures of this little cutie. She’s a doll.

How cute is all this? What a fun surprise I got in the mail today! My little sis in my sorority (yes, for those of you who didn’t know, I was in a sorority in college) sent me the sweetest ladybug package today! Look at all these goodies! She sent me the squares for my 100-wishes yo-yo-quilt and doll, adorable ladybug notes for the girls (and me!), and then other fun ladybug goodies–a spatula (Kerrie, where in the world did you find that? Too cute! I’m going to have to hide it from Ashlyn! She loved it!), little magnetic ladybug bookmarks (perfect for my adoption book club reading), and little ladybug buttons (hmmm….these might be a fun addition to the yo-yo quilt…). Kerrie, thanks so much for your thoughtfulness and for your ladybug hunting! What a great little I have…even after 13 years.

100 Wishes Quilt

3.10.09

I started this a long time ago. But, I’m picking it up again now. I’m really wanting to start working on it. So, if you are reading this and want to help me, I’d SO appreciate it!

To welcome new life, a tradition exists in northern China to make a Bai Jia Bei (100 good wishes quilt). Family and friends contribute a piece of cloth and a good wish for the baby. The cloth is all sewn together into a quilt, and the good wishes are put into a scrapbook for the child. The quilt symbolizes wrapping the child in the good wishes of family and friends.
I am making my own version of this quilt by making a yo-yo blanket for Lydia and a yo-yo doll for her big sister Ashlyn. Would you please consider helping me by contributing?
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Choose a 100% cotton fabric that you like. It can come from a fabric store, be something you already have, or be a piece from something special to you like a special piece of clothing, etc.
2. If the material is new, wash it and let it shrink before it is cut.
3. Cut a square measuring about 12″x12″.
4. Write your wish or blessing for Lydia. The wish can be your own thoughts or words, a favorite poem or quote, a blessing, a prayer, a favorite Scripture, etc. You can email it to me or send me a hard copy. From all of these, I will create a scrapbook for her. Please also include a picture of you or your family. You can email a digital picture to me or send me a hard copy. We would love for you to write a few words separately for Ashlyn as well so that she can have a scrapbook that goes along with her yo-yo doll.
Thanks for considering being part of this special project of preparation for both of our daughters–the one we have and the one we will have one day.

Adoption Music Giveaway to Beat the Winter/Waiting Blues

3.2.09

I’m hosting a giveaway for adoptive moms or waiting adoptive moms. It’s for a cd made up of my adoption music playlist. These songs include encouraging songs for the wait, songs specific to adoption, as well as some songs about parenting in general. These are my personal pics, so many of them are Christian songs. If you want to be included in a drawing for a free cd collection of the songs to encourage you, please leave a comment with your name and where you are in the adoption process. I’ll do the drawing in 1 week. I’m hoping to have some fun myself doing this as well as encourage you out of the winter blues…or waiting blues!

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
