God’s small words speaking big to me today

8.5.08

Evan is at Camp Jumpstart this week, a camp run by our school district for kindergarten kids who need a little extra help for whatever reason to transition to first grade. We had a tough day yesterday dropping him off there–he cried a lot. And, we had a tough evening last night at soccer camp. I was spent last night and have carried that fatigue into today. When I went to pick him up this afternoon, there was a father there waiting for his daughter. He went on to tell me that his daughter has a twin brother but that the child is autistic and completely non-verbal at 6 years old. “Wow,” I said, “I can’t imagine how hard that must be.” He said that it is terribly hard and that the boy goes to a special school everyday that is about 40 minutes from here. My two younger kids were running around as we waited and I told them to calm down. He said, “I’d give anything to hear my son scream like that.” “I’m sure you would,” I said, sympathetically.

Changes my perspective on things today. One little statement from a father with heartache spoke loudly to me today.

comments from elderly man

8.1.08

My trip to the grocery store brought an interesting conversation. As we were leaving and all three kids were either sitting in or riding on the sides of my cart, a cute elderly man (as a sidebar, when do people become “cute” rather than simply old…not sure) sees us and the following conversation ensues:

Cute elderly man: You sure have three cute kids.

Me: Oh, thanks.

Cute elderly man: My daughter has two kids, and I thought she had her hands full…woah

(note–I do have three kids under 6, but I also had three kids under 4–I did have my hands full then. And, I guess I do now as well. But, it’s not as if three young kids is unheard of. I mean, Erika has three kids 2 and under–now that’s crazy)

Me: Well, yeah, I guess so.

Cute elderly man: They are too well behaved. You must beat them.

(Okay, the conversation has gone south. What in the world am I supposed to say now? That is one of the strangest comments I’ve ever heard. In the second that I’m considering my response, I am fully aware that Ashlyn’s head injury is looking pretty gross today—darker and scaly since the glue is probably going to fall off in the next couple days)

Me: (chuckling sort of) Well, you’ve caught me at a good time. They aren’t always this good.

(quickly walking out the door)

Very odd conversation.

Note. The attached picture is not THE cute elderly man from the store. But, I thought he was A cute elderly man that looks strikingly similar to the one today. And, I had to post a picture because posts without pictures are not nearly as fun posts with pictures.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
