They went. They stayed. We conquered…I guess

8.31.10

First day of school.
What can I say?

Evan woke up excited (“just a little bit” he said)
Drew woke up on the wrong side of the bed. The big kids had their doors decorated with streamers for the first day as we traditionally do for special days. His day is coming with starting preschool next week. That didn’t give him any consolation though. He wanted streamers…today.
My third grader and my first grader. (sigh)
All 4…with a still mopey Drew.
Mama and Evan. Good gracious, he’s getting big.
Uh oh. A yawn already just lining up to go in. She is so not a morning person.
No tears from Evan for the first time EVER!
Mark took off work, and Grammy came for the day. We all took the littles to the Please Touch Museum. (shhh….we managed to not have it mentioned to Evan and Ashlyn and I’d like to keep it that way. Don’t want them to think we just party when they go to school.)
There’s Evan doing his traditional wave coming out of school. It’s like summer never even happened. This is what he’s done every year, everyday when he comes out of school. He didn’t miss a beat today. That’s Drew blurry at the bottom waving back in between his whining and complaining about being thirsty and being hot and blah blah blah. (Sorry…he was high maintenance today with the transition of the big kids being gone and all the attention going to them.)
There’s Ashlyn. As predicted, she came right out and doted on lil Lyds. The only thing she was worried about with going to first grade was missing Lydia with being gone all day.
Apparently, Drew didn’t conquer as well as the big kids did. After his high maintenance/fussy day, he crashed. This is how we found him before dinner.
Praying we all get adjusted to this new season quickly.

And, for those of you wondering…yes, I cried. But, just a little. It is always hard for me on the first day of school. But, it’s definitely easier sending off two happy children. Years past have been 400x harder for me.
No, maybe even more than that.
When I put Evan on a school bus for kindergarten, and he was crying and clinging to me, I cried so hard walking back home. I called Mark on the walk and told him my heart had just driven away on a school bus.

Sunday Snapshot: {Our Ever Helpful Big Sister}

8.30.10

Ashlyn: “Mom, I changed Lydia for you ’cause she woke up.”
Me: “What? You changed her? Really? The last day of summer and now you learn how to change her diaper???? Let me see.”

Lydia: “Yup, she changed me.”
Lydia: “What do you think? Not bad, huh?”
Lydia: “I can do the China squat still.”
Lydia: “And, I can walk around pretty good.”
Lydia: “Let me show you that squat again. I rock at it.”
Lydia: “Wait…not good.”
Lydia: “Mama, could use some help here. Can you put the camera down?”
Lydia: “Ash, please. Mama’s just taking pictures of my embarrassing moment here.”
Ashlyn: “Oh! Oh no! Did that diaper come off? Here you go.”
Lydia: “I don’t know about this.”
Lydia: “Mama, not sure if this is gonna work.”
Lydia: “I’m feeling a bit insecure.”
Ashlyn: “Now, there you go. You’re okay.”
Lydia: “Okay…okay…I think we’re good now.”
Lydia: “Phew. Thank you, God, for my big sister. You can put the camera away now, Mama.”

Ni Hao Y'all

I’m tickled pink (with whip cream and sprinkles) that Stephanie over at nihaoyall.com picked my last Sunday Snapshot as her favorite. I’m doing a little happy dance (that won’t be caught in pictures). Gotta say–not surprised that my donuts and ice cream post was her favorite after I read her post about s’mores!

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
