Lydia is 15 months old today! So, it’s time for a little EncycloLydia. She can say “bye” (sort of) and “uh oh.” She also says “muh muh muh” when she wants something. She walks and runs and does a mean knee-bending dance whenever she hears music.

She’s got 4 front teeth and both of her upper cuspids are just breaking through (I had to google names of teeth to come up with that one, by the way). When we were in Guangzhou, China, she weighed just under 16 lbs. At her last appointment, she weighed over 17 1/2 lbs. In less than 8 weeks, she gained 1 3/4 lbs–remarkable really since a child between 12-24 mo. typically gains 3-5 lb. in a whole year (googled that too).

She loves my car keys, the telephone, and any little thing she can hold onto that is not a toy. She also loves climbing in the frig and stealing the utensil holder from the dishwasher.


Climbing stairs has also become a favorite activity. She turns into a crazy mermaid in the bath, flopping around everywhere when we turn the water on. She loves eggs, any fruit, and any noodles with tomato sauce. And, she loves ice cubes. She still takes 4 bottles a day, 8 oz. of soy formula each (hence why she’s gaining weight).

She still has the hole in her heart (VSD) that she was diagnosed with as an infant. But, we’re fairly sure she won’t need any surgical intervention to repair it. Yea! She did fail her hearing test last week though. So, we have an ENT appointment scheduled for July and are prepared for them to tell us she needs tubes in her ears. And, as you can see, she gets PLENTY of attention around here–from her family and others (she was quite a distraction at Evan’s field day on Tuesday. Don’t worry. I didn’t let her get too overwhelmed by the admirers.).

Wanna Cry?

Go to a kindergarten graduation ceremony. Gets me every time.

Drew and Lydia anxiously waiting for Ashlyn’s class to arrive on stage (and Lydia does in fact have keys in her mouth. They are her favorite toy…and pacifier). They lasted in these seats for…not even 2 seconds. As soon as Ashlyn walked onto stage, Drew went and sat on the floor up front. Seconds later, Lydia joined him. A few minutes later, I did too since those two can’t really be trusted (as you can tell from the video of the diploma hand-off).

Perfect Steamed Eggs – my secrets

We were told that Lydia liked steamed eggs. Before we traveled to China, we weren’t even sure what that meant. Do they mean hard boiled eggs? Are they in the shell? We learned what it was in China when the petite little miss totally destroyed a family-size helping of the stuff. So, I made it my mission to find a recipe for it and perfect it at home. I tried on our first day home (not recommended to do that as I was nearly comatose with jet lag and emotionally spent). My attempt was a flop. But, since then, I have figured it out (I think…I hope my Chinese friends Tony and Lily don’t read this recipe and laugh at my vain attempt at it!). I’m ready to unveil my very complicated and difficult recipe so that other mothers of Chinese children can make their children smile with a taste from home and maybe some of you mothers of American children may enjoy giving it a try as well–I mean, if you can handle how complicated this recipe is.

Ingredients:
1 egg
about 1/2 cup water
little bit of salt
(so complicated)

Mix the egg and the water very well. This is the key to my technique. Don’t skimp on the whisking, ladies. Whisk it until your wrist hurts. Add a little salt and put in a small oven-safe dish. You can add some fixins if you want to now–bacon pieces, ham, spring onion, dried mushroom–I haven’t tried this though so do so at your own risk. Put the dish in the top steamer tray of a rice cooker–also key to my technique. My attempts on the stovetop got clumpy and, well, gross.

Push “steam” on the rice cooker and let cook for about 15 minutes. Remove when it is the consistency of a custard–it reminds me of a coconut cream pie filling (not in taste, just appearance). There will be a little bit of water on the surface you can pour off (be careful not to pour your entire masterpiece into the sink though. I almost made that mistake a couple times).

No complicated recipe is complete without some photos–this one includes even some after photos because, well, because I couldn’t resist.

Yes, she has egg on her face. But, she’s happy because it’s steamed egg. And, yes, the girl has some serious aversion to staying sitting down in her high chair. I don’t know what’s more challenging–her totally ignoring us when we say “sit down, sit down” about 400 times or a very pretty high chair that is not designed functionally well.
