Happy Fastnacht Day, People

3.8.11

There’s nothing quite like waking your family up to the sound of a deep fryer.

Today is Fastnacht day — for those of you who are thinking, “fast-what?” it is the day before Ash Wednesday when households would use up the fat in their house before Lent started. It literally means in German “the night before the fast” (okay, I didn’t just know that. I googled it.). Making homemade fastnachts has always been a family tradition since….well, my grandmother’s grandmother maybe? I’m not going to be the one to break tradition. We like tradition.

So, at 5:30 am, I headed to the kitchen to start fastnachting the day using the original family recipe.

I quickly found that taking photos seriously impeding the fastnacht process. I had a time schedule I was up against.

I promise you won’t take in any calories by simply looking upon this picture. Sadly, I cannot say the same for myself since I did a lot more than simply look.

The boys woke up first and gobbled some down before I could clean my hands and grab the camera again. But, since the girls tend to sleep a little later, I did manage to take some pics of them.

Mmm…deep fried and covered in powdered sugar.
Why does Lydia respond to “Do you like it?” by showing it to us?
That’s not a sour face. It’s a silly smile face. So cute.
It just happened to be a gathering at Community Bible Study today with international foods. German fastnachts? Perfect. I loaded about 6 more on top of this plate that my family didn’t polish off.
Now, we’d be set if we were giving up fat for lent. Perhaps I should actually consider it given the number of these babies that I have eaten today.

Sunday Snapshots: {Still dreaming of Disney}

3.7.11

Everyday.

Everyday, the kids “play” Disney World. Everyday, they shout out, “Mama! Mama! I found a hidden Mickey!” Yesterday, Evan found one on his bedspread…which is a quilt…a plain blue, non-Disney quilt with white circle stitching. Of course, it doesn’t help that we got new iphones (was going to post on that alone but thought it was just…wrong), and Mark has a Disney app that tells you how long the current wait times are. I confess that we have been known to sit at the dinner table and have contests with who can guess the correct wait time. I usually win (it helps that Drew guesses completely odd numbers like 150,000 minutes). With Lydia’s birthday on Thursday, I took the older kids shopping Saturday to buy her some gifts just from them. They insisted on the Disney Store, of course.

I didn’t pull my camera out this Sunday for any snapshots. But, I did find these three pieces all created this Sunday. They definitely serve as snapshots in and of themselves of how my children are currently spending their free time.

From Ashlyn.
I wonder if her list of new year’s resolutions when she’s 11 will include being a Disney character. Why wasn’t that one on my list?
From Drew (in case you couldn’t read his name at the bottom which shockingly has the right number of lines on the “E”). I wonder if he loves me in other places too…in a house with a mouse? here or there? anywhere?
From Evan. I cannot reveal his grand idea of the new wii game he is designing and submitting to the directors of Disney (wouldn’t want to jeopardize his chances of paying for all of our children’s college tuitions), but I can tell you that these are just a portion of some of the villains from it. My favorite is probably the curst pirit though Zurgs spaceship in the top right corner is awesome.

I asked Evan, “When are you guys going to stop talking about Disney World everyday?” He answered, “Never! I’m going to talk about it until I die and then when I go to heaven, I’ll talk about it with God.” My first thought was that God wasn’t going to be so interested in that conversation. But, then I thought about Evan and how much joy it must bring to His maker when he simply enjoys the world around him. That might be an interesting conversation.

I caved

3.2.11

I do recall complaining this morning to some ladies about how strange it is how our children now celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. I just don’t get it. I don’t get why my children’s entire elementary school would be gathering together to sing happy birthday to Dr. Seuss. He’s dead as of 1991. I just googled it. I get that it’s fun and all that. But, all the hub bub is a little over the top.

Then, I picked up Drew from school. And, there he was proudly wearing his Cat-in-the-Hat hat.
And, he asked me for green eggs and ham for lunch.
And, I caved.

There they are. Funny how simply changing the color of something yummy can really make it totally unappealing (hence why Heinz discontinued their colored ketchup line. Ick. And, I say again Ick.).
No, my kids will not get Dr. Seuss day gifts or a special birthday cake. But, I guess eating a little green eggs and ham won’t kill me or them.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
