Living out James 1:27 from my dining room

5.24.11

I was simply searching for an African doll. That’s all. I emailed a missionary who our church supports, knowing she works with village women who do crafts. Maybe one of them could make a doll. The missionary told me she no longer worked with those women but gave me an email to get in touch with one, Mary Magdalene.

All I did was send her a simple email asking if she or one of the women she works with could make a doll.

But, her response left me stunned. She told me that only 4 days earlier–she gave me even the exact time of day–she had cried out to the Lord asking him to bring someone to buy her crafts.

She had been widowed twice, both husbands had been killed in war, leaving her with 9 children to raise on her own. But, what we would see as a desperate situation did not stop her from bringing 7 orphaned children into her home. One of the children she now cares for was abandoned at the age of 6 because it was discovered that she is HIV+, which she contracted from her parents, the ones who abandoned her. Mary is a strong and faithful woman who trained women in her village to make beads and helped them learn how to sell them in the marketplace. They pool the money made and split it between them so that all are provided for.

But, here she was, crying out for provision, desperate to see God at work. 4 days later, she received my email. I encouraged her to send me what she had–I will find people to buy it, I told her. Just send it, I said. And, she did. She sent jewelry and more jewelry and handmade animals and more jewelry…and two little dolls. The dolls that started it all.

So, here I am with a dining room full of what some may see as paper beads and small animals but what I see as precious jewels and treasures, created by women sitting together in community, caring for the least of these, in faith that He will provide.

Join me in being part of God’s promise to them.

Email me or contact me via Facebook where pictures will be posted for purchase. Or, visit the dedicated page I just created on We Are Grafted In with pictures of some of the pieces as well.

Wrap bracelets ~ $15
Shorter and Medium length necklaces ~ $15
Double strand necklaces and Extra Long necklaces that double over ~ $15
Earrings ~ $5
Animals ~ $7

Prices are marked slightly above cost so that I can send her the amount owed her as quickly as possible. Any profits above and beyond the cost of the pieces will be given to The Sparrow Fund with Mary Magdalene’s full support.

Red Pajamas for The Sparrow Fund

5.24.11

Vanessa and Lynnette are friends who share a love for unique, creative, high quality accessories and apparel. These stay-at-home mommies created Red Pajamas 3 years ago to give themselves a creative outlet and to share their designs and bring back your childlike love for items you simply never want to give up. They have created and will continue to add to this line of unique items in the hope that you will find something that will become your very own “red pajamas.”
You have have have to check out their item called “My Daddy’s Shirt dress.” It is the best idea I’ve seen for Father’s Day — send one of your husband’s old shirts to them and they will turn it into a dress for your girlie. Perfect and genius, frankly. If the shirt is XL, they can make a larger size dress for your older girlie if you have one my older girlie’s size. I mean, really, totally genius.
While you are there, check out all the other classic but modern pieces as well. So very clever.

And, they’ve just added to their business a new home line.

Though there aren’t many items there just yet, the few that are are showstoppers.

This is almost too pretty to use.

And, this one. Let me just say that if I were a tea towel, I’d be this one. I LOVE this fabric. Simply adore it.
And, these creative ladies have hearts that are warm towards adoption. Lynnette is a proud auntie of 2 nephews and one niece who were adopted from Haiti.
She told me —

The financial burden of adopting can be discouraging. We are excited for the opportunities that The Sparrow Fund will give to families who would otherwise not be able to afford them.

Take a few minutes to visit both of their shops and order something before the end of the month so that 10% of the total sale will be donated to The Sparrow Fund. And, tell them The Sparrow Fund sent you!

Ginger Peachy & Simply Avonlea for The Sparrow Fund

5.24.11

There are a lot of things I just love, I’m realizing. That’s not a bad thing, right? I love when a 20 year old young woman has her own little business using the skills her grandmother taught her starting when she was 9 years old. I just love that.

Ginger Peachy Kids’ Lauren has 4 sisters – two biological ones and two from China. One of those sisters joined their family in 2009 and the other in spring 2010, the same time Lydia joined our family. Lauren shared with me the excitement she has about making her adorable little animals for children all over the country.

She told me —
I just love it when I find out that one of my items is for a child who has just been adopted. My prayer is that it will bring comfort to them as they adjust into a new life with their Forever Family! I am so excited to be a part of this, and I pray that the Sparrow Fund will be a blessing to many families as they take the adoption adventure!

What a neat young woman who is already doing some amazing things…as is one of her sisters.

Jen is Lauren’s older sister and at 22 years old is a recent college graduate, part-time nanny to her two Chinese sisters, and part-time photographer. Her love for photography comes through when you look at the pieces she is selling in her Etsy store Simply Avonlea. Somehow, she is able to to freeze moments, record memories, and capture glimpses of the world God has given us in a way that is artistic and beautiful.

Jen told me —

My passion for orphans and adoption began when my family first jumped into the world of international adoption. Since then, it has been a blessing to see so many families – as well as my own – shaped by the miracle of adoption.

I am so thankful for Lauren and Jen and for the encouragement they are to me as a mother of both biological and an adopted child. Please visit their stores and encourage them in what they are doing. Consider purchasing something from them before the end of the month — 10% of total sales this month will be given to The Sparrow Fund to benefit adoptive families.

Hello

I overthink everything. This blog is a prime example. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for a read. Actually, make that a pot of coffee. There’s a lot of overthinking here.
