Created for Care: What it was and what it wasn’t
I hauled myself and no less than 100 lbs. of loot down to Atlanta this weekend (the bags, board, and myself did arrive in tact). I was all energized to be with friends–some I’ve never even met before (I’m a blogger and I still recognize how odd that sounds)–and share about The Sparrow Fund. I confess I expected a girly fest with good food and a pep rally of sorts for orphan care and adoption.
With about 440 women there and about 1,110 children who are no longer orphans represented (amen and amen), that was just sorta what I imagined. I guess I sort of expected adoption to be glorified a bit.
I was wrong.
Someone else was glorified.
The sound of over 400 mother’s voices joining together in praise is some serious worship and perhaps a small glimpse of heaven.
And, we got schooled in responding to the call and then following the One who calls not the call itself.
Hmm…not exactly the adoption pep rally message I was expecting.
And, I realized the weekend wasn’t as much about adoption as it was about the One who adopted us and who called these 440 families represented to adopt to begin with.

I’m about to have a lot of fun
In less than 10 hours, in the wee hours of the morning, I’m heading outta here and heading down south.
To this place.
Clearly, I’m totally roughing it.
As are over 400 other women who will be there with me for the Created for Care retreat.
I’m gearing up for several days of smiling until my cheeks hurt and adoption talk until my throat hurts.
That is, assuming I can make it there traveling by myself with 2 nearly 50 lb. duffle bags, my carry-on bag, and a big foam board sign.
Man training
It’s something we’ve talked about for years. We’ve said we’d do it. And, this was our chance.
And, we’re about to have our first 10 year old, people.
[pause for dramatic effect]
And, that 10 year old apparently can’t learn about manhood by heading to Disney World for a long weekend with Mom. (I swear I tried to make that sound like it would be really successful. Alas, I ultimately lost that one.)
Instead, given that he’s all into Wonka this and Wonka that, there only was one good option.
Mark took Evan out early on Saturday morning to run some errands one of which required a stop at the gas station where Mark returned to the car with a big ole Hershey bar which just so happened to have this in it when Evan tore it open.
The next 36 hours involved lots of smiles…and lots of sugar.
He even manned up with a hair cap with said 10-year-old-to-be to learn about cacao beans around the world and how chocolate is made.
But, apparently, there is something to be said about sugar overload and silliness.
Little hearts and minds open up to talk about things like who we are and who God is and that being a man means rejecting passivity, accepting responsibility, leading courageously, and expecting the greater reward, principles Mark set out to teach our up-and-coming man.
